The third decan of Cancer
The closing ten degrees of Cancer, where care stops stopping at the family and the boundary gets very hard to find.
The technical picture
- Degrees
- 20 to 30 degrees of Cancer
- Sun here roughly
- July 11 to July 22. The boundary shifts by about a day with the leap cycle, so a birthday within a day of either end needs a calculated chart.
- Sign ruler
- Moon, over all three decans
- Traditional face ruler
- Moon, from the Chaldean order
- Modern triplicity ruler
- Jupiter, by way of Pisces
- Do they agree
- No. The two traditions disagree here, as they do on twenty-seven of the thirty-six decans.
The core of this decan
Protectiveness widens here past anything it can actually protect. Pisces colors these degrees, and the feeling that was aimed at a household starts reaching toward whoever needs it. Planets here are markedly compassionate and markedly porous. The response to suffering is immediate, and it does not check first whether the suffering is any of the person's business.
How it differs from the rest of the sign
Where the first decan of Cancer cares for who is present and the second cares deeply for a chosen few, this one has trouble drawing the line anywhere. That makes it the most generous third of the sign and the most easily depleted. It also sits at the end of a sign, which traditionally carries a summing-up quality, and here that shows as a kind of care that has been through the personal and come out the other side into something less specific.
The two rulers
The traditions split, and both point the same direction for once. The modern scheme gives these degrees to Jupiter, through Pisces, which adds the scale and the faith. The face system gives them back to the Moon, the sign's own ruler, returning at the end of the sign to where it began. Jupiter widens the care and the Moon keeps it personal, and charts with planets here tend to show the tension between the two quite plainly.
Where the friction is
Compassion without an edge runs out. A planet in these degrees can give past the point of usefulness and mistake the exhaustion for a moral requirement, and there is nothing built in to say stop. The porousness is the other half. Feelings arrive from outside without being labelled as such, and a person can spend a long time carrying a mood that was never theirs and calling it their own.
Working with it
Build the boundary outside yourself, because willpower will not hold it. A standing commitment, a fixed hour, somebody who notices when you are gone, all work better here than a resolution. It also helps to ask where a feeling came from before acting on it. And accept care as readily as you offer it, which this decan finds much harder than it sounds.
Questions to sit with
- Where are you giving past the point where it helps anyone?
- Which feeling this week arrived from somewhere outside you?
- When did you last let someone look after you?
