The core of this decan

Openness closes down in the middle third of Cancer. Scorpio colors these degrees in the modern scheme, and the softness gains a floor under it: the same responsiveness, held back, watching. Planets here tend to feel as much as the first decan does and to show considerably less of it. Loyalty runs deep and so does memory, and both are extended deliberately rather than automatically.

How it differs from the rest of the sign

The opening decan of Cancer offers care immediately. This one assesses first. That single difference changes the whole texture: relationships here take longer to begin and last much longer once they have, and the withdrawal when trust breaks is more complete. Against the third decan, which dissolves the boundary altogether, this one keeps a firm one and lets very few people through it.

Both readings are useful and neither is soft. The modern scheme gives these degrees to Mars, by way of Scorpio, which accounts for the guardedness and the force under the surface. The face system gives them to Mercury. That Mercury is the more interesting of the two here: it suggests the depth is being thought about instead of only felt, and it often shows as an unusual accuracy about other people's motives, arrived at quietly and rarely mentioned.
