The first decan of Virgo
The opening ten degrees of Virgo, the most purely analytical stretch of the sign, with the Sun behind it in the older tradition.
The technical picture
- Degrees
- 0 to 10 degrees of Virgo
- Sun here roughly
- August 22 to September 1. The boundary shifts by about a day with the leap cycle, so a birthday within a day of either end needs a calculated chart.
- Sign ruler
- Mercury, over all three decans
- Traditional face ruler
- Sun, from the Chaldean order
- Modern triplicity ruler
- Mercury, by way of Virgo
- Do they agree
- No. The two traditions disagree here, as they do on twenty-seven of the thirty-six decans.
The core of this decan
Virgo is clearest in its opening third. Observant, practical, and occupied with whatever could be improved. Planets here notice. The noticing is quick and specific and rarely announced, and it tends to arrive before any opinion about what was noticed. This is the most straightforwardly discerning third of the sign, and the least complicated by anything else.
How it differs from the rest of the sign
Virgo's three decans put the discernment to different uses. This one analyzes. The second brings Capricorn in and the analysis becomes structural, aimed at systems that will outlast the day; the third brings Taurus and it warms considerably, turning toward the body and the craft. Here it stays close to the immediate task. A planet in the first decan of Virgo fixes what is in front of it and does not particularly want a bigger job.
The two rulers
The disagreement here is worth having. The modern scheme gives these degrees to Mercury, the sign's own ruler, which fits the analysis exactly. The face system gives them to the Sun. That Sun changes the reading: it says the discernment is close to the identity, that being the person who notices is part of how someone knows who they are, which explains why criticism of the work is so often felt as criticism of the self here.
Where the friction is
The eye that finds what is wrong does not stop at the desk. Planets in these degrees tend to run the same analysis on themselves and to hold a standard they would never impose on anybody else, quietly and continuously. The Sun underneath makes it harder to put down. If noticing flaws is part of who you are, then leaving one alone can feel like a small failure of character rather than a reasonable choice.
Working with it
Decide in advance what is not going to be improved, and write it down. A list of things allowed to stay imperfect does more here than any amount of additional effort. It also helps to separate the work from the worker out loud, since this decan runs them together by default. And aim the eye at a real problem, because it will find one somewhere regardless.
Questions to sit with
- What have you been correcting that was fine two versions ago?
- When did a comment about your work land as a comment about you?
- Where is the standard you hold yourself to one you would never ask of a friend?
