The first decan of Pisces

The opening ten degrees of Pisces, the most purely Jupiterian stretch of the sign, with a hard Saturn behind it in the older tradition.

The technical picture

Degrees

February 18 to February 28. The boundary shifts by about a day with the leap cycle, so a birthday within a day of either end needs a calculated chart.

Modern triplicity ruler
Jupiter, by way of Pisces
Do they agree
No. The two traditions disagree here, as they do on twenty-seven of the thirty-six decans.

The core of this decan

The first ten degrees of Pisces are the sign at its most open: receptive, generous, and inclined to believe the best of a situation before checking it. Planets here take things in without much filtering. The compassion is immediate and it does not ask who deserves it, which is the decan's great strength and the source of most of its difficulty.

How it differs from the rest of the sign

Pisces divides its openness three ways. This one gives. The second brings Cancer in and the giving turns protective and personal, aimed at the people close by; the third brings Scorpio and it acquires depth, edge, and a good deal more discrimination. Here there is no filter at all. The first decan of Pisces is the most trusting third of the most trusting sign.

The two rulers

No decan splits the two traditions further than this one. Modern practice gives the first decan back to the sign's traditional ruler, so these degrees belong to Jupiter, which fits the faith and the generosity. The face system gives them to Saturn, which is about as far from Pisces as the seven planets go. That Saturn is not a contradiction so much as a requirement: it says the openness needs a form to run in, and charts with planets here often show a person whose compassion works properly only once it has a structure around it.

Where the friction is

Openness without an edge runs out. A planet in these degrees can give past the point of usefulness and read the exhaustion as a moral requirement rather than a signal, and nothing in the decan says stop. Discernment is the specific gap. Being taken advantage of here is the open door working exactly as it was built to, and it says nothing at all about intelligence.

Working with it

Use the Saturn the old tradition puts here, and build the boundary outside yourself where willpower is not required to hold it: a fixed time, a stated limit, a person who notices. It helps to ask where a feeling came from before acting on it. And let yourself be looked after, which this decan finds a great deal harder than doing the looking.

Questions to sit with

  • Where are you giving past the point where it helps?
  • Who would notice if you quietly stopped showing up?
  • Which of this week's moods did you pick up rather than produce?
