Moon Phases, and the One You Were Born Under

The moon phase is the simplest thing in astrology to verify, because you can walk outside and check it. It is also the one piece of a birth chart that needs no calculation at all: it is just the angle between your Sun and your Moon.

The phase is an angle

A moon phase is nothing more than the angular distance between the Sun and the Moon as seen from Earth. At zero degrees they occupy the same place in the sky and the Moon is invisible. That is a new moon. At ninety degrees you see half of it lit, at a hundred and eighty degrees the Earth sits between them and the whole face is illuminated, which is a full moon. That is the whole mechanism. Nothing else is involved. It also means that the aspect between your natal Sun and Moon and the phase you were born under are the same fact stated two ways.

The eight phases

New moon, at zero degrees, is dark and is read as beginning without a map. The waxing crescent follows, then the first quarter at ninety degrees, which is read as effort against resistance. The waxing gibbous approaches fullness. The full moon at a hundred and eighty degrees is read as culmination and awareness, everything lit and nothing hidden. Then the waning gibbous, the last quarter at ninety degrees on the far side, read as reassessment, and the waning crescent, the dark before the next beginning. The cycle takes about twenty-nine and a half days.

The phase you were born under

Every chart contains one, and it is worth knowing because it describes the relationship between your Sun and Moon in the most literal available terms. People born at the new moon have Sun and Moon in the same sign, so purpose and instinct point the same way, with the loss of perspective that comes from having nothing to see yourself against. Full moon births have them opposite, which gives awareness and a permanent negotiation. Quarter moon births carry the square: an internal argument that produces friction and, given time, unusual self-knowledge.

What about full moons and behaviour

The claim that full moons affect sleep, mood, birth rates or emergency room admissions has been studied extensively and the results are consistently negative or too small to matter. That is worth stating clearly rather than leaving to implication. What is genuinely true is more modest and more interesting: before electric light, a full moon meant you could see, and human activity really did organise around it. The association is old and has a real origin. It is simply not evidence that the Moon is doing anything to anybody now.

Common questions

How do I find the moon phase I was born under?

Calculate your chart and look at the angle between the Sun and Moon. Zero degrees is a new moon, ninety a quarter, a hundred and eighty a full moon. The moon phase calculator will also tell you for any date.

Does the full moon affect behaviour?

The research says no, or that any effect is too small to detect reliably. The association is old and probably comes from a time when a full moon was the only reason you could see outside at night.

What is a void-of-course moon?

A period after the Moon makes its last aspect in a sign and before it enters the next one. Traditionally read as a poor time to start something that needs to go anywhere. It happens frequently and briefly.

How long is the full cycle?

About twenty-nine and a half days from one new moon to the next, which is why lunar months and calendar months never quite line up.
